For nearly a century, Alabama Power employees have worked to provide Alabamians with the reliable, affordable electricity the state needs to grow and prosper. But Alabama Power has another longstanding tradition: helping Alabama communities and families through a range of company and volunteer initiatives.
“Serving our customers, serving our communities, serving our state – it’s just part of our company’s culture. It will always be that way,” said Charles McCrary, Alabama Power president and CEO.
Economic and Community Development
One way the company has helped communities is by playing a role in attracting quality industry to the state. In fact, Alabama Power has been helping companies with site selection since 1920, when Alabama Power’s new industries division was founded. In 1924, the company created its economic development department, the first utility in the nation to do so. Through the years, the company has helped recruit many important corporations, including Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Honda America, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and General Electric. Today, Alabama Power’s Economic and Community Development department works not only with companies, but with cities and counties, helping them prepare to compete for jobs in the global economy. The Economic and Community Development team also helps communities grow in broader ways, through strategic planning, leadership development, downtown redevelopment, diversity training and other services. Alabama Power Foundation
Another way Alabama Power has worked to help families and communities is through the Alabama Power Foundation. Since its founding 15 years ago, the nonprofit foundation has provided numerous grants supporting education, the arts and other community and nonprofit programs. But the foundation’s work isn’t just about dollars and cents. It’s about helping people help themselves. That’s why many of the foundation’s grants and initiatives are designed to help Alabama communities capitalize on their own strengths.
