 Area Bank Serves Local Commmunity

For the past ten years, National Bank of Commerce has been an active participant in the Christmas Angel program through Partners in Education. Christmas 2004 proved to be their most successful campaign ever, and they are anticipating a better 2005.

For the last two years, NBC has sponsored thirty-four students from their newly formed partnership with South Hampton Elementary. Teachers from each grade level pick students that are in need and ask the children to write down what they would like for Christmas. Departments and individuals at NBC selected one or more of the students they wished to sponsor and generously bought each child items from his/her wish list. Although these items are rarely included on the list, the children are almost always in need of clothing and other essentials. When possible, sponsors may choose to provide those items as well as educational games, bikes and Game Boys. These were the most requested items, so there were many of these and other toys given by the sponsors.

In 2003, “Angel Santa’s” from the Mortgage Department enjoyed the act of giving as their department chose to help an angel girl and boy. Not only did the Mortgage Department help angels, but overall, NBC brought joy to many and fulfilled Christmas wishes in 2004 and will do so in years to come.

As Alecia Bowser, HR Officer, puts it, “We are fortunate in the fact that we are able to provide Christmas for our families and several children partnered with our adopt-a-school. Without the sponsorship of some very genererous people, some of these children would not have a Christmas at all.”

National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has formed several successful partnerships with non-profit, community based organizations and neighborhood associations in the City of Birmingham. There is no greater example than NBC’s long time relationship with Titusville Development Corporation (TDC).

TDC, a 501 3(c) community development corporation, is located in Titusville, one of the oldest, most well established communities in Birmingham. Working together on projects over the years, NBC and TDC have seen constructive results for the residents in the community. NBC has financed several projects for TDC including the financing of an old grocery store which TDC converted into a training facility for at risk youth. NBC provided funding for acquisition and renovations of the unit located on Iota Street in Titusville.

“Working with an organization like TDC has been a rewarding experience” says LeDon Jones, Community Development Officer at NBC. “When you have an organization that’s deeply rooted in the community, every project started and completed enhances the quality of life for all of the residents in the community.”

“Titusville Development Corporation is pleased to acknowledge and give outstanding recognition to the National Bank of Commerce for its support of Titusville neighborhood revitalization projects”, says Roger White, President of TDC. “Loans were extended and a line of credit was provided that allowed TDC to acquire and renovate a commercial building and rental properties in the Titusville neighborhood. TDC has been pleased with the relationship and the support NBC continues to give. NBC’s LeDon Jones has proven time and again, to be sensitive and exceptionally responsive to the needs to nurture the growth of a developing non-profit community organization. His advice, direction, and opinions have advanced the organizations credit capabilities and vision.”

TDC is currently planning several significant affordable housing developments that combine acquisition, new construction, rehabilitation, and commercial development interests. TDC believes that its long standing banking relationship with NBC enables the organization to garner financial support for projects presented for consideration.

NBC welcomes the opportunity to partner with organizations like Titusville Development Corporation. To discuss potential
opportunities for your community, contact LeDon Jones at (205) 421-2211. For more information about TDC, please contact Roger White at (205) 252-5526.
