Dothan Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Sponsors Teenlift Program

The Dothan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated works diligently through its Five-Point Programmatic thrust to uplift its surrounding communities through service projects and programs. Since 1986, the chapter has sponsored Delta Jewels and Trinket's, a youth out reach program which caters to the needs of girls 7 - 18 years of age. "It is our belief that we must work with our school-age girls to foster a holistic positive sense of self by providing them with the tools necessary to establish a healthy sense of self and to maintain it as they mature," says Oveta Pearce, Dothan Alumnae Chapter President.

Monthly activities are designed to support positive personal and social skill development, high academic achievement, community and civic involvement. Beginning in September, the chapter hosts an orientation jamboree, which gives young girls the opportunity to learn more about the program. The chapter hosted the Jewels' and Trinket's first workshop October 4. The chapter President, Oveta Pearce, presented an interactive program on "Ladyology," which gave the participants an opportunity to hear and to model proper etiquette and social skills for various occasions. Other events slated for this year include, "I Am My Brother's Keeper" (Thanksgiving canned food drive), "Spreading the Love" (Goody baskets for senior citizens), and "I Am Black, Beautiful, and Blessed" (Black History Lecture Series), "How I am Living the Dream" (Essay Contest for MLK Day Celebration), "I Am the Future" (Health Awareness Seminar), "I Know What I Can Be" (Career Development Activity).

In efforts to provide cultural experiences, the chapter plans educational excursions as well. The Jewels and Trinkettes have traveled to the Space Center in Hunstville, AL; the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery; the Civil Rights Museum in Birmingham; and the USS Alabama in Mobile: the W. C. Handy Home in Memphis ,TN and the MLK Center in Atlanta, GA..
