Project SHARE
Alagasco is proud to be a co-sponsor of Project SHARE (Service to Help Alabamians with Relief on Energy). The company has helped thousands of eligible Alabamians by providing money to pay energy bills, Contributions from Alagasco customers help fund Project SHARE. A person who qualifies can receive assistance one time during the winter and one additional time during the summer if severely high temperatures cause a health threat
Who can get help?
- People who are 62 or older on low, fixed incomes with no other source of funds
- Disabled people who are unable to maintain a regular family income
Enlarged Print Bills
Upon request, the company will send vision-impaired customers a large-print bill to make it easier for them to read their monthly statements. Customers can call their local Alagasco office to take advantage of this service.
SSI Inspections
Alagasco customers who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can get the gas heating equipment in their homes inspected free of charge. Free inspections are done June 1 - August 31. Alagasco's service personnel will make any necessary repairs. Labor is free if the work is done within one hour. The cost of parts may be charged to a customer's bill. To schedule a free inspection, customers can call their local Alagasco Service Center at the telephone number listed in the top right corner of their gas bill.
Gatekeeper Program
Alagasco trains its customer contact employees, like meter readers, to notice unattended and overlooked elderly people who may need help. The program is designed to act as a gate through which elderly customers in need can be put in touch with the social service agencies that can help them. Alagasco has participated in the Gatekeeper Program since 1987.
Third-Party Notification
Alagasco customers may designate a relative or a social agency for us to contact before disconnecting service for non-payment To do so, customers can call or come by our office to name the person or agency they would like for us to contact.
Budget Plan
During the cold months, it is easy to use more gas than you use used in the summer. To help avoid the ups and downs of your gas bills, customers can take advantage Budget Plan. This is a free service available to Alagasco customers. The company estimates the amount of gas a customer will use during the Budget Plan period based on the amount he has used in the past Then, the company divides that amount into 12 equal payments so a customer's gas payments are level throughout the period.
Third-Party Referrals
Alagasco will assist customers if they need help beyond an individual payment plan and the Budget Plan. The company can provide customers with the names of agencies with programs designed to help customers pay their gas bills.
Bank Draft Plan
If you want to pay your monthly gas bill without writing a check, call your local Alagasco office to inquire about the Bank Draft Plan. With this plan, paying your gas bill is a breeze because you don't have to deal with checks, cash or postage. Your bill is paid directly out of your bank account.
No Customer Charge
Customers who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Family Assistance will not be billed a monthly customer charge. To apply for this program, take your award letter or verification to your local Alagasco office.
Phone for hearing impaired
Our Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD) gives our speech and hearing impaired customers the ability to communicate with us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you need to contact us through this device, you can call us toll-free from anywhere in Alabama at 1-800-548-2547.
Services for visually impaired
For our visually impaired customers, Alagasco offers several free services. Upon request, we will send you a large print bill or a Braille bill to make it easier to read your monthly statement. We also will modify the knobs on gas cooking equipment.
These modifications include using rivets, notches or Braille stickers to mark the various heat settings on your existing range controls. If you or someone you know would like to receive these free services, call your local Alagasco office.
