and taking steps to obtain a job. All
of this takes place in a small cinder-block building and classroom
trailer located next door to Miller Wire Works, directly across from
the Marks Village public housing community in Gate City. The address
is 7501 Georgia Road, just four blocks west of Oporto Madrid Blvd.
Perseverance
against all odds and ultimate success...
Daroues is one of WOOS recent students to earn his GED. Daroues
enjoys cooking (The Art of Cooking, was the title of
his practice GED essay). He also loves spending time with his children,
Daroues, Jr., and Bryanna, both of whom will watch their dad walk
across the GED graduation stage in cap and gown this coming May.
April
just passed her GED exam. Soon afterwards, she was accepted into
the UAB Honors Program and will begin her college studies this Fall.
She will join another WOO graduate, Andrea, recipient of the Judge
Oscar W. Adams, Jr., Scholarship.

Opportunities...
The WOO offers job training courses too. Sue Anne and Sarita were
WOO CNA (Certified Nurse Aide) Health Care students who recently
were hired as patient care workers at UAB. Lucille, a CNA and GED
student, along with Sue Anne, and Melvin are just completing the
American Red Cross clinical program. There, they studied healthcare
along side medical school and nursing students from UAB, Samford,
and Jefferson State Community College. WOO students are right there
in the mix with medical students from around the county.
WOO
students are working with the latest technology. The Computer Operations
classes help students to navigate the Windows operating system,
and the Microsoft Office package. In addition, Computer Repair is
taught at the WOO and students learn to troubleshoot their equipment.
Brandy & Kesha just earned certificates in basic computer operations
and typing. All of our students seeking employment learn to compile
and computerize their resumes. WOO computer students have obtained
employment at local banks, hospitals, and insurance companies.

Teaching
with and learning from the whole person...
In addition to the academics and skill programs, the WOO teaches
with and learns from the whole person. The whole person includes
counseling our students with problems which they face at home and
in the community such as hunger, homelessness, substance abuse,
medical and legal matters, domestic and community violence, unemployment,
and more. No subject is taboo if it concerns the well-being of our
students. A WOO Womens Group meets every Monday afternoon
and address issues such as young parenting, relationships, spouse
abuse, and self-esteem. A WOO Substance Abuse Prevention and Education
workshop helps users and recovering addicts. WOOs Uplift Project
focuses on the problems and peer pressure which affect the young
women and men of our community, and encourages them to pursue their
dreams and aspirations.
Sometimes
three generations from one family are studying at the WOO at the
same time. This intergenerational atmosphere promotes family literacy
and a safe-heaven environment. WOO enjoys the support and encouragement
of our neighborhood associations, and the local businesses within
the community.
