Valley
Haven School is a training and educational facility for infants/toddlers
and adults who are developmentally disabled. The adult clients are
significantly limited in two or more areas of development and function
in the moderate to severe range of mental retardation. The Early
Intervention Program serves children with special needs from Chambers
and surrounding counties.
The
year round program operates from 8:00 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. EST.
Professional personnel and technicians are specially trained to
serve the needs of students with handicapping conditions. The curriculum
is designed to meet the individual needs of each student. The varied
activities are broad in scope to provide an appropriate training
experience for students of all levels. Valley Haven employs 24 full
time, 4 part time and 4 contracted employees.
Valley
Haven School provides a community-based service for individuals
with retardation who previously were not receiving education, training,
and other supportive services. It also serves as an example to the
public regarding the needs as well as the abilities of this special
population and what they can achieve in a structured, well-planned
training program.
The
training activities of the program are conducted within 12 classes.
Objectives and activities for each client are individualized according
to the client's abilities, and the grouping of the clients is as
homogeneous as possible. Adult clients are rotated between ten adult
classes.
The
Multiple Abilities Class has 4 adults. These clients have severe
physical limitations. Proper positioning and exercises are used
to prevent problems and normalize movements. The staff works to
promote the carryover of the physical therapy program for each person.
The
Adult Basic Education Class provides an opportunity for the clients
with academic abilities to become more functional and productive
citizens by learning many basic educational skills.
The
Pre-Vocational Class focus is to prepare the clients for jobs in
our workshop or in supported employment. Work type tasks are used
in this training.
In
Workshop Skills Area, clients are exposed to a variety of real work
tasks. Training with paid work is a big part of this area.
The
goal of the Leisure-Crafts Class is to provide challenges that will
stimulate and motivate the clients, regardless of disability, while
having fun.
The
focus of the Recreation and Community Living Skills Class is to
teach the clients to function as independently as possible in the
community. The clients also spend a part of their time in recreation.
The
Recreation and Physical Activities Class focuses on physical development,
sports and recreational games. This area is where specific training
in PE-type skills takes place.
Hike/Bike/Run
is the fund drive for Valley Haven School each year. The goal is
to raise $100,000 for the locfont face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">The

that operate Valley Haven School. This year Hike /Bike/Run was held
Saturday, May 1st .
This
volunteer effort brings together hundreds of committed individuals.
Together they raise the necessary funds so that Valley Haven can
get state and federal grants. It is an approach that works. A great
team of area people generously volunteer their time to this cause
each year. Hike/Bike/Run is one of the most cost-efficient and effective
ways to meet the communitys need for services for children
and adults with handicapping conditions.
On
Hike/Bike/Run Day, participants hike, bike, run, ride or skate.
They get pledges for their participation or can just make a donation
to participate.
The
dollars that are generously given through Hike/Bike/Run are handled
very carefully. All contributions are overseen by a volunteer Board
of Directors. The Board of Directors of the Valley Haven School
takes its responsibilities very seriously and has all funds audited
by a CPA each year.
