Power Company Is Big On Education

Alabama’s future lies with its children. Unfortunately, many schools in Alabama face serious budgetary constraints. That’s why Alabama Power Co. contributes to a variety of initiatives designed to help schools, teachers and students.

“We understand how important it is to do whatever we can for education,” said Charles McCrary, Alabama Power president and CEO. “We will continue to look for innovative ways to support schools and help improve the quality of life for all Alabamians, especially our children.”

As part of the company’s commitment to education, Alabama Power has established a new Office of Volunteer and Education Services. The office oversees the company’s education programs and helps coordinate the volunteer efforts of thousands of Alabama Power employees and retirees across the state.

One of the latest programs is Patriots & Pioneers, a joint project of Alabama Power and the State Department of Education. Patriots & Pioneers is an educational packet developed by Alabama Power and education experts that helps teach children about the Tuskegee Airmen, the groundbreaking African-American military fliers, trained in Alabama, who broke racial barriers during World War II. Each Patriots & Pioneers package contains a copy of a documentary about the Tuskegee Airmen, plus lesson plans that can be tailored to any grade level. The packages are being distributed to more than 3,000 public school classrooms and libraries.

Dr. Joe Morton, interim state superintendent of education, recently joined McCrary to unveil Patriots & Pioneers. “This is a wonderful learning resource that will be an asset to our classrooms. We are grateful to Alabama Power for supporting our schools, and for this public-private partnership that will benefit students across the state,” Morton said.

“Patriots & Pioneers is just one way we are working to help support Alabama schools and schoolchildren,” said Carla Roberson, director of Volunteer and Education Services for Alabama Power.

In another recent initiative, Alabama Power joined with The Nature Conservancy’s Alabama chapter to distribute interactive computer disks to thousands of science teachers statewide. The disks provide information about Nature Conservancy preserves around the state and lesson plans about Alabama’s extraordinary biological diversity. The information on the disk is also available online at www.nowandforeveralabama.org.

Among the most popular education initiatives supported by Alabama Power is “Science Suitcases,” which loans interactive science kits, free of charge, to hundreds of Alabama teachers every year. The Science Suitcases program is based at The Water Course, an educational science center in Clanton also supported by Alabama Power. Each year, thousands of students tour The Water Course to learn about Alabama’s valuable water resources and how to protect them for future generations.

Beyond the programs directly supported by Alabama Power, the Alabama ren about the Tuskegee Airmen, the groundbreaking African-American military fliers, trained in Alabama, who broke racial barriers during World War II. Each Patriots & Pioneers package contains a copy of a documentary about the Tuskegee Airmen, plus lesson plans that can be tailored to any grade level. Power Foundation provides a variety of grants to teachers, libraries, educational programs and institutions. These grants have helped teachers buy classroom supplies, expand environmental education and conduct intensive reading programs, among other worthy projects. One of the most effective ways Alabama Power supports schools is through the volunteer efforts of thousands of employees and retirees. Volunteer members of the Alabama Power Service Organization donate time and financial resources to schools across the state, as do the Energizers, the volunteer organization comprised of retirees and their spouses.
