The PRODUCTIVE Summer For Mt. Moriah  TeenPrenuers 2004

Many gifted adults and teens have been blessed with talents that they are passionate about. These talents could possibly be cultivated into prosperous entrepreneurial enterprises. Most people never realize their true aspirations for business ownership because of lack; lack of start up capital, lack of business ownership experience or a lack of successful business owners who are willing to commit time and effort as mentors. In fact, the only thing found in abundance when an entrepreneur begins to develop an idea for business ownership may be the voluminous voices of negativity and doubt from nay saying family and friends.

The Mt. Moriah Teenpreneur (Teenaged Entrepreneur) Program is a business ownership boot camp primarily designed for individuals between 14 and 19 years of age. For 77 days during the summer of 2004, the Mount Moriah Teenpreneurs will perform a plethora of professional services which includes, but is not limited to: residential and commercial cleaning, automotive detailing, budget counseling, academic and computer training, pressure cleaning vinyl sided homes, lawn care, moving services and painting. Performance of services will begin on June 1st, 2004.

Just like business ownership, the Mt. Moriah Teenpreneur Program may not be for everyone. The program was not conceived to simply teach teenagers how to independently make money. The Mt. Moriah Teenpreneur Program teaches Biblically based wealth principles which are centered around seven successes: spiritual, professional, physical (health), financial, relationships, emotional and personal. Teenpreneurs will learn all of the basic, functional aspects of a successful business and will perform in three of its departments on a rotational basis. Teenagers who participate in the business boot camp undergo a rigorous, in depth professional preparation. Mt. Moriah Teenpreneurs must have a savings account within their third week of participation. They must complete a two paragraph essay after reading one book from amongst a list of required reading ( “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”, Rich Dad, Poor Dad”, “Think and Grow Rich”, “The Millionaire Next Door”). The teens will also tune into the Dave Ramsey show, a spiritually-based, nationally syndicated financial empowerment talk show which highlights proven techniques designed for its listeners to become debt free. The Mt. Moriah Teenpreneur training is centered around one hour of classroom instruction per week.

The weekly training takes place at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL (Pratt City). Appropriately so, since the program&#dea for business ownership may be the voluminous voices of negativity and doubt from nay saying family and friends.

Steven T. Hammond, the Director of the Teenpreneur Program sums up the concept this way: “At Mt. Moriah, we are blessed to have a pastor, Reverend Dr. Bernard Williams, who is a true visionary. Under the spiritual guidance of Pastor Williams, Mt. Moriah has witnessed a major building renovation in 1997 and the subsequent launch of a Child Development center in 1998. We have started a Youth Ministry and in 2002, our Missions Department began addressing the food and clothing concerns of the needy on Saturday mornings. The Teenpreneur Program is consistent with our vision and commitment to first and foremost address the spiritual needs of the individual and the holistic needs of the community. I am in the terrific position to head a program which has the unconditional cooperation and support of the spiritual leaders of Mount Moriah beginning with Pastor Bernard Williams and continuing with the Minister of Missions, Reverend Lewis D. Harris. That support is anchored by the Youth Minister, Reverend Jamie Hodge. I am ecstatic about the possibilities and the children are definitely fired up! We are prayerful that God will add his blessings to the Teenpreneur concept. We are treading uncharted waters with the courage of David, the wisdom of Solomon and the patience of Job. We are proceeding prayerfully and in a fiscally responsible manner. One hundred percent of the monies- donations, capital generation projects, matching funds, etc.- goes directly towards the gainful employment of teenagers.”

The techniques taught during the 77 days of the Summer 2004 Mt. Moriah Teenpreeneur Program will prepare its participants for successful careers as business owners or as employed professionals. The fiscal skills and life skills learned, when applied by the participants, can be used to ensure the responsible handling of money and for wealth creation, not just for the summer of 2004…but for generations to come.
