 Gadsden’s Breakaway Ministries Profile

In 1985 Eddie Nichols, who was then youth pastor of First Baptist Church Gadsden, Alabama and now president of Breakaway Ministries, noticed that his youth were not getting the individual attention and the discipleship they needed from various camps and events they were attending at that time. Out of this need, he decided to start doing his own events with his students in which he would train and disciple older students who in turn would be the leaders at his camps, carrying on the discipleship with his younger students.

Over the course of the next ten years, he continued this with great success. In the mid 1990s, some other churches heard of the success that Eddie had been having with these camps and started bringing their youth along. In 1996, this camp that had been called “Breakaway”, was lasting multiple weeks with many churches in attendance. It was clear to Eddie that God had called him out of the church youth ministry in which he had spent the past 16 years, and into the full-time ministry which is now called Breakaway Ministries.

Breakaway Ministries now ministers to thousands of youth each year through their different ministries. Breakaway is not a ministry of huge proportion nor is it a huge money making venture for those involved. What it is however is a ministry that doesn’t come with a price tag, and doesn’t hold events so large that you and your students get lost in the crowd. Breakaway is all about developing relationships with students, and offering them opportunities to get involved in ministry.

An old Chinese proverb says, “Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I’ll remember, INVOLVE me and I’ll understand.” Well that is what we try to accomplish with students. We want to know the students, pray for them, and play the role that God has planned for us in the lives of these students. Our door is always open for those who need someone to listen, someone to confide in, or just someone to pray with. At Breakaway Ministries, you always will find us available.

Over the years, Breakaway has had countless opportunities to share Christ with those around us, not only do we put on several weeks of camp a year, there are also other events; such as Christian concerts, revivals, and disciple now weekends. In an attempt to build relationships with the students we meet, we try to create events that are centered on youth and we are establishing an environment that they truly feel comfortable in and around. In doing this, we have been able to meet and form friendships with multiple Christian artists, some being Rebecca St. James, Jeff Deyo, Big Daddy Weave, Fusebox and many others. In creating events that youth are drawn to, we are given opportunity after opportunity to build relationships and to lead you to Jesus.

It is our desire and heartfelt wish that our ministry will do nothing but bring glory and honor to our Father and Savior Jesus Christ, and in doing that if souls are won for him then our purpose will have been fulfilled.

For His Cause—Eddie Nichols
President of Breakaway Ministries
