The Birmingham
Airport Authority not only operates Alabama's largest airport, Birmingham
International, serving nearly 300,000 passengers each year, and offering
more than 160 daily flights, but also takes an active role in serving
its community.
Guided
by the principle that Community Matters, the Authority takes pride
in actively communicating and working with our neighbors to achieve
a safer and more prosperous community in which to live, work and
to do business. In that spirit, the Authority maintains such valuable
programs as Adopt-A-School, Presidents' Advisory Meetings and Community
Action Partners as well as many others.
The
Adopt-A-School program enables the Airport Authority to assist and
support the educational curriculum and extra-circular activities
at five area schools. Throughout the school year, BAA volunteers
assist with various school functions and activities, such as reading
to a class or helping with field day. A golf tournament is held
each fall to raise money for the purchase of needed educational
resources that may not otherwise be funded. Nearly $20,000 has been
raised and distributed by the BAA in the past two years.
Through
the community Action Partners Program, BAA staff and their families
volunteer time and services to assist local Neighborhood Associations.
Volunteer assistance often includes landscaping, community clean
up, and help in community fund raising activities. Partnering with
members of the community affords both Airport employees and community
members the sense of cooperation and community spirit and adds to
the overall quality of life of area neighborhoods.
As
well as partnerships with the local schools and communities, the
Birmingham Airport Authority provides a monthly forum for local
elected neighborhood presidents and volunteers. Through the President's
Advisory Committee, information is exchanged on issues of property,
planning, expansion, environmental and noise abatement projects.
Such open communication fosters the cooperation necessary for the
airport and its neighbors to grow and strengthen together.
In
addition to maintaining a low-cost and convenient airport to serve
and support the Birmingham Region, the Airport Authority's commitment
to be a responsible member of the community and a friend to neighbors
remains a top priority. To learn more about the Birmingham Airport
